Opioid Addiction Discussion Set For Novi

From The City of Novi: Drug overdose is a growing epidemic which takes more lives each year than car accidents or gun violence. Of those 46,000 deaths, half are directly related to opioid abuse.. Novi is not immune from this issue. Public safety first responders have used the drug Naloxone to reverse the effects of opioid overdose on more than 25 people since 2015.

In an effort to bring more awareness to the issue, the Novi Police Department is partnering with the school districts in Novi and Walled Lake, area healthcare providers and the FBI and DEA to host a community discussion on opiate and heroin addiction/abuse at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at Novi Middle School.
The free event will feature a 45-minute documentary - created by the FBI and DEA to educate students and young adults about the dangers of addiction - called “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict.” Following the movie, those in attendance will have the opportunity to ask questions of subject matter experts including DEA Special Agent in Charge Tim Plancon.

“This is obviously a problem in the area and one the community needs to address together,” said Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police David E. Molloy. “We must work to identify solutions to the problem and help those battling addiction find the resources and assistance they need. By telling someone that you or a person you know has a problem, you could save a life.”
