Sylvia Nasar, author of the bestselling biography A Beautiful Mind, will deliver the School of Business Administration's 22nd Gorlin Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26, in Varner Recital Hall.
Her elegantly written biography tells the story of John Nash, the Princeton mathematical genius who suffered from schizophrenia for three decades before recovering and winning a Nobel Prize in economics. The story was the basis for the Academy Award-winning film of the same name, starring Russell Crowe.
Nasar recently published Grand Pursuit: The Story of Economic Genius in Modern Times, which has received rave reviews since its release. The book, which chronicles the development of modern economics from Victorian England to modern India, will serve as the topic of the author's lecture at OU.
In addition to showing how big economic ideas have allowed mankind to transcend much of the deprivation and misery of the recent past, Nasar will discuss the notion that through an ideological revolution, the bottom nine-tenths of humanity could escape poverty and nations could shape their own destinies.
