The historic Detroit Masonic Temple made progress last week toward remaining a fixture in Detroit, thanks to two donations, including one from the Corinthian Masonic Lodge No. 241 in Rochester.

The local lodge donated $18,000 to the cash-strapped Detroit Masonic on May 29.

“Corinthian Lodge 241 decided to make this donation to the Detroit Masonic Temple as a capital cornerstone so that this historic institution may move forward towards the future,” the Worshipful Master of Corinthian Masonic Lodge No. 241 William Schlick said. “The Detroit Masonic Temple is one of the most unique and architecturally beautiful buildings in the world, located in the heart of the Detroit Theater District. We make this donation with the hope that other lodges and individual Masons located around Michigan and throughout the nation and world will join us by making a contribution to the support the future of the Detroit Masonic Temple.”

The Detroit Masonic also paid off its back tax bill to the city of Detroit last week after an anonymous $142,000 donation, the Detroit News reported, preventing the world's largest Masonic Temple to the Wayne County auction block.

In accepting the donation from Corinthian Lodge 241, Detroit Masonic Temple Association President Roger Sobran said, “There is a growth and renaissance that is happening downtown, specifically, in and around the Detroit Masonic Temple. The positive momentum and vibe surrounding Detroit creates a golden opportunity for this historic and beautiful building to revitalize itself and once again stand as a cornerstone for Detroit’s 21st century social and economic renaissance.”
