OXFORD, MI — The melodic chime of bells pierced through a silent night in downtown Oxford on Friday as an entire community gathered to remember the four teenagers killed in a shooting at Oxford High School earlier this week.

The bells rang for four minutes, symbolizing the four victims: Tate Myre, 16, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, Hana St. Juliana, 14, and Justin Shilling, 17.

Thousands gathered at the vigil, the Detroit News reported. Among them: politicians, local leaders, pastors, and community members who anchored the crowd with chants of, "We are Oxford."

"We've lived through one of the worst weeks in Michigan's history," Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told the crowd. "But this week, we’ve also seen some of the best in one another."

Oakland County Executive David Coulter said the community will remember more than the tragic shooting — it will remember the unity displayed on Friday, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"It may seem impossible now on this night of unspeakable pain that anything like joy can be in our future but I have faith that there's a peace that comes despite our limited understanding," Coulter told the crowd.
