Photo of the Day: Where Did the Elks Club Go?
Here's why it was demolished — and what's going in its place.
The former Elks Club building on the corner of Main Street and Lysander Road just north of downtown Rochester is a memory now.
The building was demolished Thursday morning. What's planned in its place? A Real Estate One office, which will be built set back about 20 feet from the road. The Elks Club building was right next to the street, in the right-of-way, which would have made road improvements on that strip of Main Street difficult, city officials said.
"We are excited to have a new building in town, and really happy to see a real estate office there," said Rochester City Manager Jaymes Vettraino.

Vettraino said the city has been "very cautious" in allowing permits for the redevelopment of the Elks Club property. Several fast-food restaurants, including Taco Bell, expressed an interest in that spot, he said. However, because the property is surrounded by a residential area, restaurants — especially drive-thru restaurants — were discouraged there.
