Residents Invited to Help Mend Mount Avon Cemetery

Residents are invited to join with neighbors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Saturday, May 18 as the Rochester Historical Commission gathers to "Mend Mount Avon" in preparation for Rochester's Memorial Day Parade.

Mount Avon Cemetery was the first platted cemetery in Oakland County and is the resting place for many veterans of all U.S. wars, according to an announcement from the City of Rochester.

Each year on Memorial Day, the Daughters of the American Revolution and veterans organizations place American flags on each veteran's grave.

Volunteers are needed to help trim back grass and provide light clean-up as many of the grave markers have become hidden by landscape overgrowth, the announcement states. No landscaping experience is needed.

Refreshments will be provided. Residents should bring a pair of work gloves and a safe cutting tool or utensil to cut grass.
