Rochester Hills Man, a Volunteer Softball Coach, Charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct

Thomas Dennis Powell, 58, was arraigned Saturday on charges of having sexual relationships with two 17-year-old female students.

Thomas Dennis Powell, 58, a softball coach at Rochester Adams High School, was charged Saturday with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree and one count of delivery/manufacture of a controlled substance.

Powell is accused of having sex with two 17-year-old female students from Rochester Hills since September.

According to a news release from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Powell is "an unpaid volunteer softball coach at Rochester Adams High School and not an employee of Rochester Schools." The release said he is employed by a national phone service provider.

The relationships were discovered when "one of the mothers suspected something was wrong and confronted her daughter about the relationship with the coach," the sheriff's release said.

Powell also is accused of supplying "one of the victims with drugs during one of the encounters" and of supplying "the two victims with cell phones he paid for so he could communicate with them," according to police reports.

Powell was arraigned by video Saturday in front of Magistrate Clement Waldmann, and bond was set at $100,000. Bond conditions state that Powell must wear a GPS tether and may not have contact with the two students, their parents or any of the witnesses in the case. He also must surrender his passport.

Powell, who has no prior criminal history, lives within 1,500 feet of the high school and has been ordered to move as soon as possible; he may not return to the school.
