Rochester Weekly Crime Report: String of Identity Theft Crimes Rocking Rochester Residents

Crooks are stealing residents' identities to file for unemployment and go on shopping sprees.

Nov. 8: A Rochester man filed a report at the Rochester Police Department alleging he was the victim of credit card fraud. The man said a credit monitoring service notified him that someone had opened up 14 fraudulent credit card accounts in his name and the identity thief used the victim's identity to go on an online shopping spree. Rochester police are investigating.

Nov. 8: A Rochester officer was dispatched to the 500 block of E. University to take a destruction of property report. The victim reported that he parked his vehicle in the private lot after having mechanical problems. Upon returning, he discovered the rear window was smashed, but nothing was taken from the car. The case is under investigation.

Nov. 9: A Rochester resident filed a report at the Rochester Police Department claiming that someone had used their debit card at an online retailer without permission. The victim claimed that this happened three times. Rochester police are investigating.

Nov. 9: A Rochester resident filed a report at the Rochester Police Department stating that someone used their personal information to file for unemployment benefits. The victim reported that they had a job and that no one was given permission to file for benefits. The case is under investigation.
