Tour The Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal
The route packs history, greenery and a sense of community all into one. Carpooling starts and ends in Rochester Hills.

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — Locals have the chance to get acquainted with one of the region’s green spaces that touts a lot of history. A Tour of the Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal will start and end at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm. It happens 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 20. The cost to attend is $18 for the public and $12 for museum members. The entry fee includes boxed lunch for the day.
Michigan’s first internal improvement in 1837 was a proposed canal that was supposed to run through the Rochester community, organizers say. The tour runs through the the remains of the Clinton –Kalamazoo canal – the answer to the Erie Canal. As attendees retrace its route from Mt. Clemens to Rochester, they will be able to walk along parts of the canal, where some portions still contain water, see remains of one of the locks, and learn the history of this manmade waterway that endured as a millrace long after its use for transportation ended.
Carpooling starts and ends at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, 1005 Van Hoosen Road, Rochester Hills.
Guests can also join the tour at 10:00 a.m. at the Clinton Township Hall in the Historic Village at Romeo Plank and Canal Road, just south of the Clinton-Macomb Library.
