Traverse 300 Years Of Detroit History At This Event

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI — The Rochester Hills Public Library is exploring the city of Detroit by welcoming Joel Stone, Senior Curator at the Detroit Historical Society for his lecture, “Unique Street Names: The Man on the Street and the Women, Too” happening Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Stone will use everyday street signs to explore the 300 years of Detroit’s history, and the stories of the people whose legacies leave a lasting impact on our roadways. These streets, traversed by citizens every day, tell a story of several important figures in Michigan history. Streets like Woodward, Beaubien, Mount Elliot, Selden and more will be investigated.

“Behind all of these recognizable streets is a man or a woman who played a significant part in Detroit’s past,” said Stone. “Sharing these stories and legacies with the community is a great way to discover the amazing stories hidden in your daily commute and the lasting impact those figures had in Michigan.”

“As part of our goal of providing life-long learning opportunities to our patrons, we’re always looking for new and interesting aspects of Michigan history to share with them,” said Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley. “We’re very excited to welcome Joel Stone to share his knowledge with the Rochester Hills Public Library.”

The program is Oct. 30 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room and is open to everyone with an RHPL library card. This program is geared toward adults but all ages are welcome. Please register in advance at rhpl.org.
