According to the criminal complaint, police were called to a Burnsville store in October on a report that Peterson was held after allegedly stealing merchandise.
An employee told police he saw Peterson in the store's jewelry department with a large quantity of merchandise in her cart, then allegedly saw her push the cart past the front cash registers, when loss-prevention employees stopped her.
After she was read a Miranda warning, Peterson allegedly admitted to trying to steal the merchandise, the value of which was $1,033.81, according to the complaint.
Peterson is scheduled to appear in Dakota County Court on July 30.
Woman Charged With Felonies After Allegedly Cashing Ex's Check
Melissa Marie Rodgers, 33, of South St. Paul, is charged with check forgery and offering a forged check, both felonies, after police say she cashed her ex's rebate check that he was expecting from the Internal Revenue Service.
According to the criminal complaint, Rodgers and the man have children together and still live together in Apple Valley though they are no longer romantically involved. The man called police in November and told them he was waiting for the check to arrive, and when he asked Rodgers if it had arrived, she allegedly told him it hadn't.
The man called the IRS, and was told the $760 check had been mailed at the beginning of November and cashed mid-month, the complaint says. The man called Rodgers about the check, and she allegedly hung up on him.
Police determined the check was cashed at the Apple Valley Walmart on Nov. 10, and surveillance video showed a woman matching Rodgers' description cashing the check. Video showed she had a girl with her and left in a green minivan, which Rodgers allegedly drives.
Rodgers allegedly told police that she had cashed the check, but said the man had given her permission.
Rodgers was convicted of misdemeanor wrongfully obtaining assistance-theft in 2006. She is scheduled to appear in Dakota County Court on July 30.
