Cooper Student Dies At YMCA In New Hope

A student collapsed and died Thursday at the YMCA in New Hope, according to reports.

The Star Tribune reported that Kalonyea Wopea, 17, was playing basketball at the time. He could not be revived and "was pronounced dead at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale," according to the Star Tribune story.

MPR said Robbinsdale spokeswoman Tia Clasen said the school provided grief counselors to students on Friday.

"It's just going to be the school coming to grips with this and trying to provide as much counseling as the students need in the next days and weeks," Clasen told MPR. "Oftentimes, when something like this happens so unexpected, the shock is initial, and then later on, a lot of the real emotion sinks in."

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to conduct an autopsy. Check Golden Valley Patch next week for more information.
