“There are many components to the game and many opportunities to practice both academic skills and soft skills,” said Liz Patrick, Tanglen Elementary teacher.

Students learned the basics of looking for patterns in the numbers to add their cards up to 15 and 31. They used problem solving skills and learned to strategize while practicing how to take turns, be patient, help their partner, and how to be a good sport when winning and losing.

Since Patrick’s class is made up of both second- and third-graders, veteran players will return next year and teach the new second-graders how to play. Students will be able to utilize the game as an independent math station and a fun activity during indoor recess times.

“It was certainly hard work and their brains were stretched in ways they didn’t expect,” Patrick said.
