Motorcycles Cruise to Mount Olive Lutheran Church for 'Blessing of the Bikes'

in Mound on welcomed 24 motorcycles to its Third Annual "Blessing of the Bikes" last Sunday, June 10.

The day began with an outdoor worship service in the parking lot of the church. Motorcycles roared into the lot before and after the service and formed a gleaming row of steel and chrome.

A leader of the Christian Motorcyclist's Association (CMA), Kevin Brase, spoke about the work the organization does worldwide. Not only do local chapters such as the "Spoke-N-Word" chapter out of Shakopee get together for regular rides and fellowship, but the organization raises millions of dollars each year to provide transportation for missionaries and pastors in many countries. Brase told the stories of pastors in rural and urban areas who must visit multiple congregations. The gift of a motorcycle, horse or even a camel can greatly reduce their travel time and enable them to reach exponentially more people. 

As the riders went to their motorcycles, members of Mt. Olive spread out among them to pray for each rider, asking God to protect the riders and their heavy metal steeds. Each rider was given a sticker proclaiming "I was blessed in 2012." Then the riders went on an hour and a half ride while those who stayed behind prepared lunch and rested in the shade. When the riders returned, everyone enjoyed lunch and visiting together. 

"Every year this event grows a little, and we hope to add more riders next year," Pastor Mike Michalk of Mt. Olive said. "CMA is such a great group for fun, fellowship and unique support of the work of the Gospel in many places."

The church plans to host the event again in 2013 on the second Sunday of June.
