Letter: Former Minneapolis Superintendent Supports Selcer

"She was a driving force in her school district to increase rigor and accountability, while engaging responsibly during a fiscal crisis, establishing sound business practices for her district and returning it to a position of strength."

To the Editor:

I am supporting Yvonne Selcer in her bid for the state house representing Minnetonka and Eden Prairie.  As a former superintendent of schools in Minneapolis, I was struck by Selcer's strong leadership on her school board on behalf of all students.  She was a driving force in her school district to increase rigor and accountability, while engaging responsibly during a fiscal crisis, establishing sound business practices for her district and returning it to a position of strength.

I ran for governor in 2006 as an independence party candidate and, like the many other locally elected officials who have endorsed her, I know that she will be an independent voice, listening to her constituents, putting the people before her party.  I have known Yvonne's co-chair, Karen Anderson, a moderate Republican for many years, and her position in Yvonne's campaign also speaks volumes about Yvonne's integrity, strength of character, and how she will serve the people of Eden Prairie and Minnetonka.

The people of Minnesota need elected officials who can work together and solve our budget problems, returning our state to a position of greatness, not a place that solves its problems by borrowing from its schools and pushing debts to the future.  I urge voters to remember Yvonne Selcer on election day.
