Minnetonka Man Charged with Threatening Woman with Knife

Police say Orlando Derrick Fields was drinking and out-of-control. "Just bring me to the penitentiary," he allegedly told police.

A Minnetonka man has been charged with brandishing a knife and threatening to kill a woman.

Orlando Derrick Fields, 42, is charged with making terroristic threats, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Minnetonka police were called to an apartment in the 5400 block of Smetana Road on  Nov. 5 after someone reported an “out-of-control” man, punching and choking victims, according to the criminal complaint.

When police arrived, they found Fields, screaming and swearing, being restrained by two women against a couch in the living room, with a third woman standing in the kitchen.

The women told officers that Fields had been drinking and was being “loud and belligerent,” calling them names. During the argument, Fields pulled out a knife and held it by his side, threatening to “hurt” and “cut” one of the women, the complaint charges.

At one point, Fields lunged at one of the women, put his hands around her throat and squeezed, cutting off her air supply, then struck her repeatedly with a closed fist, the women told police.

After police arrived, Fields told them, “Just bring me to the penitentiary,” according to the complaint. Police also heard Fields threaten to “murder her, kill her mother if she is still alive, and kill her daughter too,” apparently referring to a visiting friend and her young daughter, according to the complaint.

Fields remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $30,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Dec. 12 in Hennepin County District Court.
