Local Man Charged After Police Find Him Squatting in Hotel Room With Stolen Items, Drugs

A 31-year-old Maplewood man was arrested in the lobby of Oakdale's Β on March 7 after police say he was occupying a room that was unregistered and supposed to be empty.Β 

According to a Washington County criminal complaint, at the time of his arrest Michael Warren Johnson was found in possession of a stolen laptop computer, mail in the name of another person, credit cards in the name of a second person, a master key card for all hotel rooms at the location and a substance which tested positive as marijuana.Β 

The complaint states Oakdale police contacted the owner of the credit cards who said her vehicle had been broken into and the contents of her purse stolen.

Police also reportedly spoke to the addressee of the mail who confirmed he had not received any mail the previous day. Β 

During a post-arrest interview, Johnson admitted to unlawfully occupying the hotel room and possessing the backpacks, the complaint says.Β

According to Johnson's court file, Washington County judge Tad Jude set an omnibus hearing for June 14 and, if necessary, a jury trial for Aug. 20.Β 

If convicted of the charge against him of possession of burglary or theft tools, Johnson could spend up to three years in prison and be ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.Β
