Oakdale Girl Scout Troop Helps Local Animal Shelter

The girls helped the Woodbury Animal Shelter address the pet overpopulation issue for our Bronze Award project.

Hi! We are 5th grade Girl Scouts from Troop 52932 in Oakdale.

Some of our troop goes to Transfiguration Catholic School and Church in Oakdale and some of us go to Rutherford in Stillwater.

We helped the Woodbury Animal Shelter address the pet overpopulation issue for our Bronze Award project. The Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. To earn this award, we had to select an issue and work as a team to make a difference. We each had to spend 20 hours on this project. We selected this topic because all of us really like animals.

We started out by getting information on the issue.

We toured the Woodbury Animal Shelter and collected information from the internet, volunteers and other non-profit groups. We collected donations from the community to make 10 fleece blankets for the adopted dogs and cats, 30+ chew toys for the rodent family, and 24 cat toys.

We held an education booth at Transfiguration where we convinced 28 people from the local community to sign the Law of the Paw. This Law of the Paw is a pledge to adopt your pet from an animal shelter, spay your pet and agree to put an ID microchip in them. We donated the posters we used at our community booth to the Woodbury Animal Shelter so they could use them in their education programs and to inspire others. We will also be donating 11 boxes of Girl Scout cookies for a sweat treat for those hard working volunteers.

We learned to work as a team and to make a plan and put it into motion. The hardest part of the project was figuring out what we wanted to do and then planning how to start. The best part of the project was knowing that our troop made our local community a better place by living out the Girl Scout Promise and Law. We also inspired younger Girl Scouts at our schools by sharing our story. We had a lot of fun!

We want to thank all those in the community that helped us with donations, information and guidance. Thank you!
