According to the criminal complaint, compiled by Robbinsdale Police Investigator Brian Sloat, a Robbinsdale police officer was on traffic patrol just before 10 p.m. March 22 when he saw a Pontiac Grand Am strike the curb with both driver’s side tires.

The officer began following the Grand Am and caught up with it as it sped through the parking lot of North Memorial Medical Center, according to the complaint. The car circled the building and sped out of the lot, failing to stop at a stop sign, the complaint says.

The officer turned on his emergency lights and continued pursuing the car, which kept going west until it crashed into a guardrail. The driver, later identified as Chester, jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

When police caught Chester, he was sweating, out of breath and smelling of alcohol, according to Sloat’s account.

Sloat told police that he knew officers were following him and he didn’t stop because he “just got caught up in the moment” and that he was under the influence of drugs, according to the complaint.
