Plymouth Resident Navigates 'Media Minefield'
Kristi Piehl of Plymouth owns a new business to help nonprofits with media relations.

Media Minefield, a media relations firm that is dedicated to helping local and national non-profits, companies and individuals tell their stories, has opened an office in Minnetonka. The company promotes itself as an “intentionally different and uniquely experienced” media and public relations firm – attributes that are evident in its approach with its clients and the employees on its staff.
Owner, Kristi Piehl, a former KSTP investigative reporter, launched the company in 2010 to help non-profits with messaging, specialized storytelling and to connect their stories with the news media. Three of Media Minefield’s employees have worked in television newsrooms as news anchors, reporters or photographers. The most recent hire is a KARE 11 videographer. In all, the Media Minefield employees have more than 50 years in news media experience and have won several awards for their work in television news including several Emmy awards.
“Unless you’ve worked in news, it’s really difficult to talk news-talk,” said Kristi Piehl, owner of Media Minefield. “Many non-profits and companies have amazing stories to tell, but they often don’t know where to begin. Any PR firm that suggests launching a media campaign with a blizzard of press releases has never worked in media. Media Minefield’s methods are the result of decades spent in newsrooms and boardrooms where effective storytelling, messaging and creativity can boost the bottom line.”
