Despite The Snowstorm, Classes Are On at Roseville District 623
Read about Superintendent John Thein's decision.

With an early March winter storm dumping several inches of snow on the Twin Cities, a number of metro-area school districts have cancelled classes today.Â
The list of closings includes the public schools in the Centennial, Farmington, Burnsville, Fridley and Mounds View districts.Â
But no cancellation of classes in Roseville School District 623.

In a message to the community today, Roseville Superintendent John Thein says it was not an easy decision to proceed with classes. Â See his letter:Â
"Dear Parents:

It is never easy to make the decision to hold classes when temperatures dip below zero or the weather is inclement. I assure you that I take my responsibility very seriously and try to keep the wellbeing of all our students and staff in mind when I make such a decision.
While it is my responsibility to decide if Roseville Area Schools will be in session, it is the parent's decision to decide if their child attends school. No credit is lost if a parent decides to keep their child home because of the extreme cold or inclement weather. It is an excused absence from school.
Many families do not have child care, family leave or the resources to provide a safe setting for their child if school is cancelled. In some cases, school has been cancelled and parents still drop their children at school or send them to the bus stop because there is no alternative for them.Â
It is also not possible to start school later because of the tiered busing system the district employs. The late elementary schools would not start until 11:35am or later. In most cases, the majority of metro school districts remain in session because of the above reasons.
It is never easy or automatic to cancel school because of the weather. Many factors enter into my decision, and I know that many families are relieved that school is in session. I am also very well aware that many families hold me directly responsible and are not pleased with my decision.
I thank you for continuing to support the students and staff of Roseville Area Schools. If you have any questions or comments concerning this communique', please contact me at 651-628-6452 or at john.thein@isd623.orgmailto:john.thein@isd623.org."
