"It has been a privilege to serve as a school board member for Roseville Area Schools. District 623 is fortunate to have so many exceptionally talented and dedicated staff and other community members. Together these people comprise the greatest strength of this district – its people.

After making the difficult decision not to run for re-election to the school board this fall I am now looking forward to the choices I will have in the November election. I hope voters will get to know each of the candidates running for election to the school board. I am impressed with the citizens who have come forward with a willingness to serve the District 623 community.
Voters may want to catch up on what’s been happening in our schools. In addition to visits to our schools and with our students, teachers, and families, a review of the district’s strategic roadmap, vision cards, and monitoring reports may be helpful. While we are fortunate to have a solid history of good things happening in our schools we also face a few challenges right now, including an urgent need to close our race-based achievement gaps while improving the experiences of and outcomes for all learners.

The school board is responsible for providing the vision, oversight, and advocacy necessary to maintain existing quality programs and practices while also ensuring that goals are met and improvements are being made. A strong governing body is especially important at a time like this when so many learners’ needs, abilities, and expectations are changing.
There are several ways to learn about how our current school board has been doing. For instance, a review of the board’s materials from the last two board self evaluations may be helpful.
Because three board members are not up for re-election, the District 623 community is guaranteed to have three very experienced board members in 2012.
I believe Roseville Area Schools will also be served well by gaining three new board members. Fresh perspectives are needed on the board at this time, and I am very encouraged to see the caliber of individuals who have put their names in the hat to serve on our school board."
