DFL Delegates Endorse Roseville's Marty for Senate District 66

Marty prevails over fellow DFL state senator Mary Jo McGuire

Roseville's John Marty Saturday afternoon won DFL endorsement for the new state Senate District 66, defeating fellow DFL senator Mary Jo McGuire.

Convention delegates endorsed Marty on the first ballot, casting 66 percent of the votes for him. A prevailing candidate needed 60 percent of the vote for endorsement.

The two lawmakers represented separate but neighboring senate districts until a few weeks ago when legislative redistricting put them in the same geographic area.

"I wasn't sure how it (the endorsement) would go," said Charlie Quick, a DFL party official and DFL chairman of the former Senate District 54.

Marty is a veteran state senator, having represented the former Senate District 54 since 1993. Prior to that, he represented Senate District 63 from 1987 to 1992.

(Friday, March 30, 5:50 p.m.): In what will feature an endorsing battle between two incumbent state legislators, the Senate District DFL will hold its convention Saturday at the former Arlington school, 1495 Rice St., St. Paul. 

The contestants are Roseville's John Marty and fellow senate colleague Mary Jo McGuire, of Falcon Heights. The two lawmakers represented separate but neighboring senate districts until a few weeks ago when legislative redistricting put them in the same geographic area.

The DFL Senate 66 convention is scheduled to convene at about 10 a.m. and could last into the afternoon, said Charlie Quick, DFL chairman of the former Senate District 54. He expects the event to draw about 250 to 300 people.

With the recent legislative redistricting, Senate District 66 includes most of Roseville that is south of County Road C and west of Snelling Avenue. The district also includes Falcon Heights and parts of St. Paul.

House District 66A incumbent Alice Hausman has no announced opponent.

Meanwhile, Roseville's remaining area that is north and east of County Road C and Snelling Avenue is now in House District 42B.

DFLers in Senate District 42 are also scheduled to hold their convention Saturday with their event set to begin at 9 a.m. at Chippewa Middle School,5000 Hodgson Road in North Oaks.

Bev Scalze,  representative for former House District 54A, is seeking DFL endorsement for the new Senate District 42.

On the House District 42B side, the announced candidates seeking DFL endorsement are Sheila Kelly, Jason Isaacson and Tammy Pust.

Kelly is an attorney officing from White Bear Lake. She has been a resident of Vadnais Heights since 1988.

Isaacson lives in Shoreview and is a communication instructor at Century College. He is a member of Education Minnesota and has worked on several DFL campaigns during the past decade. 

Pust, a partner at a Minneapolis law firm, is currently on the Roseville City Council. A resident of Roseville for 25 years, Pust has been involved in a number of community organizations including the North Suburban Senior Council and Keystone Community Services.
