Planet Fitness in Roseville Shapes Up With Grand Opening Celebration
New local gym features, among other things, a low $10-a-month membership fee and judgment-free workout areas.
Planet Fitness , which touts itself as the nation's fastest growing fitness club. on Saturday celebrated the grand opening of its new 30,000 square-foot Roseville gym.
Planet Fitness' Roseville club is its largest one in Minnesota, boasting more than 80 brand-name cardio machines and offering a low $10-a-month membership fee. It is adjacent to neighboring Sports Authority in a small shopping district south of Highway 36 and east of Fairview Avenue.
Franchise co-owner Daniel O'Shaughnessy said he and his business partners are looking to expand Planet Fitness' presence in the Twin Cities by opening several more clubs in the Twin Cities in the next three years.

O'Shaughnessy said Planet Fitness' niche is offering high-quality, low cost gyms that are designed to especially appeal to first-time fitness club users. The Roseville club opened in late December but marked Saturday as member appreciation day.
Since its' opening, the Roseville club has been gradually building its membership with about 65 percent of enrollees being women, O'Shaughnessy said.

Among the Roseville club's new members is Luann Landkamer, a Roseville resident who says she works out at the gym five to six times a week. Landkamer, who celebrated her 48th birthday on Saturday, said she likes Planet Fitness because it is a comfortable gym.
With it purple facade, the Roseville club is "loud and proud," O'Shaughnessy said. "We wanted to make a big splash."
O'Shaughnessy said his partnership group, Philadelphia-based Aisling Fitness LLC, chose Roseville for their first Planet Fitness in Minnesota because of its attractive geographic location and strong demographics.
Founded in the early 1990s, Planet Fitness touts itself as a basic health club operator, providing a wide array of exercise equipment but without the added cost of such things as juice bars and childcare. Today, it has about 630 locations across the U.S.
Planet Fitness also pitches its facilities as places where ordinary people can go to exercise in its "Judgement Free Zone, which "means members can relax, get in shape, and have fun without being subjected to the hard-core, look-at-me attitude that exists in too many gyms."
