Proposed Voter ID, Marriage Amendments Subject of League Forum

A local chapter of the Minnesota League of Women Voters will hold an educational forum on the proposed Minnesota Marriage and Voter ID amendments at  7 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Roseville Maintenance building, 1140 Woodhill Drive. 

The forum will be held in the Birch Room at the Maintenance building with a look at what will happen if voters in November approve one or both of the amendments, League officials said. The League's Roseville-Maplewood-Falcon Heights (RoMaFH) chapter is hosting the meeting.

The League said forum speakers are Craig Klausing, former Roseville mayor and city councilman, who is active in “Vote No!,” the movement opposing the amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, and Carolyn Cushing, a member of the RoMaFH Board of Directors who is familiar with the Voter ID issue.
 
“I will talk about the serious consequences of enacting such an amendment,” said Clausing, an attorney.  “It could not be overturned by legislation.”

Meanwhile, “most people don’t know the full story of voter photo ID,” according to a news release from the Minnesota League of Women Voters. The League has contended the proposed requirement would create barriers for at least 144,000 Minnesota voters, eliminate absentee voting for homebound voters, and cripple Minnesota’s Election Day registration system.

Proponents have contended the Voter ID amendment is needed to prevent or eliminate the threat of fraudulent voting.

Turn to the first right and the Roseville Maintenance building is directly on your left.  Parking is available in front of the building or closer to Roseville City Hall.
