“The Sound of Music,” by Rodgers & Hammerstein, is based on the true story of Maria Von Trapp, a young woman who leaves her convent in Salzburg, Austria, to become governess for seven mischievous children of a retired naval captain. Maria’s sense of humor and adventure, along with her love of music, win the children over and eventually she and the widowed captain fall in love. The story plays out against the backdrop of the beginning of World War II.

“The Sound of Music” opened on Broadway in 1959 and was turned into a major motion picture in 1965, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The movie won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture of the year.
Roseville Area High School (RAHS) is finding innovative ways to ensure that its fine arts programs remain strong.
The school’s upcoming production of the beloved classic, “The Sound of Music,” is a case in point. The musical is being directed, produced and managed almost entirely by students. Students are in charge of every facet of the production – from the pit orchestra, to the choreographer, to the technical director. With a cast and crew of roughly 70 students, 25 musical numbers, and five sets, the high school production rivals many community theater efforts.
Senior Leah Soule has taken on the daunting task of directing this ambitious production. Leah has been involved in many facets of the RAHS Drama program for four years and plans to pursue theater in college.
All profits from “The Sound of Music” will go directly to RAHS theater students to offset the costs of attending the International Thespian Festival this summer.
