Roseville Saturday Shout Out: Behrens Take Top Prize in Essay Contest

Roseville City Council to honor middle-school essay winners at its March 18 meeting.

 

This week Roseville Patch is giving a shout out to Nicholas Behrens for placing first in the annual Roseville Human Rights Commission's Essay Contest for area middle-school students.

Behrens, an eighth-grade student at Parkview Center School, won the contest from among more  than 180 essay entries, according to the city of Rosevillle in its latest weeky e-mail newsletter. Taught by Lucas Ebert, Behrens will receive $100 and his essay will be entered in the League of Human Rights Commissions statewide contest, the city said.

Second and third-place finishers,respectively, in the essay contest were Grace Smith and Rose Wagner. Both are eighth graders at Parkview Center School and are taught by Ebert.

Meanwhile Olivia DiGiorno, Heather Knutson and Eli Sailer-Haugland received honorable mention. DiGiorno and Knutson are eighth graders at Parkview and taught by Ebert, and Sailer-Haugland is seventh grader at Roseville Area Middle School (RAMS) and taught by Cameron Johnson.

Patch's weekly Saturday Shout Out post recognizes Roseville's people, businesses and organizations for noteworthy accomplishments, honors and good deeds. 

The city said that participating essay contestants from Parkview and RAMS wrote on this question: As a member in your community, what responsibility do you have to protect human rights in your community?  How can you make a change in your community?

The Roseville City Council is scheduled to recognize the winning students at its March 18 eeting.

Lahti Wins Regional Spelling Bee

Meanwhile, our second Shout Out of the week goes to Parkview Center School seventh grader Jacob Lahti. Lahti won the metro-area regional spelling bee on Saturday, March 2.  

As regional champion, Lahti will head to Washington, D.C. in May to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, according to Kathy Englund, a District 623 spokeswoman.
