Roseville Saturday Shout Out: Cassie's Crew Raises Nearly $6,000 For Diabetes Research
Roseville fifth-grader Cassie Westad, who has juvenile diabetes, overcame flu to go on the annual fundraiser walk.
Roseville fifth-grader Cassie Westad raised $5,950 for diabetes research in finishing the annual "Walk to Cure Diabetes" fundraiser held last month at the Mall of America. . Β Β
Westad recovered from the flu just in time to participate in the annual walk, her sixth year partcipating in the event, said her mother Tammy Westad.Β
"Cassie ended up getting the flu the week prior to the walk and was very sick," Tammy Westad said. "We were not sure she would make it to the walk. Β We ended up in the ER and on an IV. Β Thankfully she recovered just in time."

For Westad, the annual fuindraising walk Β is a personal thing:Β Now 11-years-old, Cassie Β has had Type 1 diabetes since she was four-and-half-years-old.Β For Cassie's Β fundraising success, Roseville Patch is giving her a special Saturday shout out. Β

Tammy Westad said she and her family were still waiting to find out from Sports Clips how much money the retailer had raised from haircuts towards the fundraiser.Β The walk raises about $2 milion annually for theΒ Juvenile Diabetes Research FoundationΒ and annually attracts upwards of 20,000 participants.
