Catch It Tonight: Transit of Venus

The Minnesota Astronomical Society (MAS), which holds its monthly club meetings in Roseville, is gearing up today (Tuesday) for one of the biggest star-gazing events of the century: The Transit of Venus.

"Venus will transition from an evening object to a morning object in a rare and dramatic event," the MAS said on its website. "Beginning at 5:04 p.m. local time from the MAS Onan Observatory, Venus will transit the solar disk for the last time in our lifetimes."

The next Transit of Venus isn't scheduled to occur until 2117, the Society said.

The MAS is having a star-gazing party tonight at the Onan Observatory in Norwood Young America, with Society officials expecting a crowd of more than 500 people to show up. For full details click on to the following link: http://www.mnastro.org/transitofvenus/.

And if you happen to miss the Transit of Venus, the MAS will have club members talk about the extraordinary astronomical event at their regular meeting Thursday, June 7. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the , 1910 County Road B W., Roseville. The session is open to the public.
