With weather forecasters predicting the Twin Cities could get up to 12 inches of snowfall from Monday through mid-day Tuesday, is the city of Roseville prepared for the anticipated onslaught of new white stuff?

"This one should be easier to deal with given we have not yet had heavy snow yet today," said Duane Schwartz, Roseville director of public works. "And if it (the snowfall) does materialize, it will drop much of the precipitation during the night where we can plow much of it off before the (Tuesday) rush hour tomorrow.

On Monday afternoon, Roseville public works crews were "providing additional treatment of intersections," Schwartz said. He added they "will more than likely return in the very early morning hours to begin plowing provided we have several inches at that time or we will adjust with the changing conditions if necessary.

"Also the temperatures are not expected to drop much given the time of year and in fact (it is) suppose to warm toward the end of the week to melt anything left on the streets," Schwartz told Roseville Patch.

However, back in mid-Deccember, the city of Roseville wasn't as fortunate dealing with a snowstorm that made for rugged road conditons. Schwartz said then that snowplowing crews were challenged in getting snow-compacted-into-ice off the city's most heavily travelled roads.

Schwartz said city crews had to put down extra chemical mix to deal with the problem. The problem was created when the heavy snowfall fell on to the warm road pavement and then rapidly falling temperatures resulted in the compacted snow turning into ice.

"The snow bonded to the pavement" of more heavily-traveled streets,"  he said. "Once that happens, it is difficult to get it (the snow) off the roads. But we are committed getting (the roads) back to safe driving conditions."
