Candy Donations for Troops

Donate Halloween candy on Nov. 3.

A Shakopee orthodontist has a deal for those who rake in the Halloween candy.

If you donate some of it she’ll send it, along with toothbrushes, to U.S. troops overseas.

This is the third year Dr. Trudy Bonvino is overseeing the initiative, according to a news release from the Lakeville and Savage office of Cosmopolitan Orthodontics and their PR firm Master Google.

"We invite patients to give up all the sticky, chewy candies that aren't good to eat when you have braces, and give them to people who can safely eat them," Bonvino said in the release.

Braces can be debonded by chewy caramels, taffy, hard candies and sticky foods, according to Bonvino. Cosmopolitan Orthodontics developed the campaign to accomplish a couple of goals: keeping patients from eating foods that would damage their appliances, and doing something nice for U.S. troops, she said.

"What continues to shock us year after year is that this program brings out the giving spirit in our patients,” Bonvino said. “Patients donate candies that are safe for them to eat, but they choose to give them to our military personnel instead."

Patients can donate Halloween candy at either Cosmopolitan Orthodontics location on Nov. 3, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

"Our objective is to keep teeth looking great, so we are sure to send our military personnel toothbrushes along with the candy," Bonvino said.
