Students, Parents and Public Invited to Shakopee Career Exploration Fair

Most of the 100 careers to be highlighted today at the high school involve at least some post-high school education.

Exposing students to a wide variety of career opportunities is the name of the game at this afternoon.

The school and Shakopee Chamber of Commerce will bring representatives of nearly 100 careers to the school to speak with students and their parents at the .

The event, now in its 14th year, targets students in grades 8-12, but the public is also invited to attend, according to Paulette Rislund, the school’s volunteer and community resource coordinator.

“It kind of opens up everyone’s eyes to what’s out there,” she said.

Professionals in careers from the trades to architecture to engineering to respiratory therapy will be available to chat informally and one-on-one about how they entered the field and what will be needed in the future as far as skills.

Shakopee’s is sending representatives to show specifically what could be available in the healthcare industry and possibly right in students' hometown, according to Karen Cook of the hospital’s community relations department.

Most of the careers involve at least some post-high school education although not all require a four-year college degree.
