Dorsett Wins $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park

It was the second Mystic Lake Derby win for the jockey, trainer and owner.

The $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park in Shakopee was the largest purse in Minnesota horse racing since 1991.

Dorsett came from last place to win the race on Saturday. The jockey, trainer and owner of the horse was Lori Keith, Michael Stidham and Terry Hamilton, respectively. The three also won the first Mystic Lake Derby last year with Hammers Terror.

"Keith took the 3-year-old colt to the back of the eight-horse field and began to pass horses on the far turn of the one-mile turf race," according to a Canterbury Park news release.

Coastal Breeze finished in second place, Canyon in third and Red Zeus finished fourth.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity,” Keith said in the release. “The trainer told me to let him find his feet, that was about it. I was pretty confident throughout. I had a lot of horse at every given stage. I felt like all I had to do was push the button and that was the case.”

Stoupinator won the $100,000 Northbound Pride Oaks. Joseph Novogratz of Excelsior owns Stoupinator, Mac Robertson was the trainer and Alex Canchari was the rider.

Seeking Treasure was disqualified, after a stewards' inquiry, for interference before the finish line. Kipling's Joy and Raising Dakota moved to second place after Seeking Treasure was disqualified.

General Jack won the $100,000 Shakopee Juvenile Stakes. Chairman Crooks finished second and A P is Loose finished third.

Attendance at Canterbury Park on Saturday was 10,372. That was more than the attendance from last year's Mystic Lake Derby of 10,127.
