'Pack The Stands' at Raceway Park in Shakopee on Aug. 4

Race car drivers and fans are looking to give Raceway Park a record crowd on Sunday.

Racers and fans of Raceway Park in Shakopee have designated Sunday, August 4 as a day to "Pack The Stands."

Raceway Park is in its last season, and its last scheduled event is September 1. The event on Sunday will be an attempt to replicate a day in 1971 when 3,200 people packed the stands at Raceway Park, according to the description on the Facebook event page.

Raceway Park is not involved in the initative; it's just something racers and fans wanted to do for the track, explained Mark Bronstad, a racer and one of the organizers of the event.

"We're just try to show support for the track," he said.

Bronstad and other racers have passed out about 2,000 flyers to spread word of the event, Bronstad said. They will also pass out flyers the size of business cards at the Shakopee Days Derby Parade this weekend.

Many others have posted messages on their Facebook pages and handed out flyers, he said. Over 300 people are listed as "Going" on the "Pack The Stands" Facebook event page.

Races at Raceway Park start at 6 p.m. The schedule includes Nascar Event racing, the Twisted Koncepts Car Show and Dukes Jump. For children, there will also be school bus rides around the track.

The bus rides are fun for racers too, Bronstad said, because they get to wave at the excited children looking at them through the bus windows.
