Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate was pleased to announce Tuesday night that 90 events were happening across the city for Night to Unite, an annual night out highlighting relationships between neighbors and law enforcement. 

A dozen or so police officers, members of the Shakopee Police explorers, Shakopee firefighters and other city officials visited many events, complete with fire trucks spraying down kids in the heat.

"It's so great they coud be here and do this for the kids," said Angie Stern, a Night to Unite event organizer at Tenth Street and Van Buren.

Residents at two senior living facilities were visited by Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate, City Administrator Mark McNeill and Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke.

Tate brought information and goodies for residents and talked about avoiding identity theft.

Residents chatted, asked questions and encouraged their visitors to help themselves to some food. 

Dorothy Wolf wanted to know why no American flags were posted downtown on Memorial Day.

"If we can't do that, we should hang our heads," she said.

City officials explained that part of the problem stemmed from road construction and that the flag-holding brackets would no longer work on the poles. McNeill, who also played songs on his guitar and sang with residents, told them they were working with the VFW to remedy the issue, as they two groups have coordinated on this in the past.

Wolf also said she had some good things to say.

"I think the police do an excellent job," she said, adding that seeing police squads patrol around their complex in the downtown area makes her feel safe.
