Scott Co. School Official Passed Over for Burnsville Superintendent
Wednesday night, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Board of Education offered the job of superintendent to a finalist from Madison, Wisconsin, though the executive director of two Scott County educational cooperatives was a close second.

The executive director of two Scott County-based special education cooperatives will be staying put.
Wednesday, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board chose Joe Gothard as its new superintendent, passing over competitor Darren Kermes. Kermes is currently the executive director of the Carver-Scott Educational Cooperative (CSEC), also known as District 930, which provides services to non-traditional students and those with special education needs, from early childhood into adulthood. Kermes also serves as the executive director of the Minnesota River Valley Special Education Cooperative (MRVSEC).
The decision came after months of vetting, many interviews and finally an extensive, all-day trial for both men, which included a tour the district, meetings with employees and students, a public community session and one final grilling by the board.

Gothard will take the reins on July 1, after current Superintendent Randy Clegg retires on June 30.
Though Kermes did not make the final cut, several members of the Board of Education spoke highly of him.

"Both were excellent candidates and I'm sure Kermes will be a super somewhere," said Board Member Ron Hill. "It was a difficult decision for me."
