Shakopee Horse Keewatin Ice Takes Home Top Prize

Keewatin Ice, winner of the Northern Lights Futurity and Debutante, was the MTA Champion 2-year-olds of 2011.

Heliskier remained undefeated after a runaway victory in the $35,000 MTA Stallion Auction Stakes Saturday at . The 3-year-old Minnesota-bred gelding is now five for five and has earned $108,192 for owner Marlene Colvin.

Heliskier ridden by Derek Bell, went to the lead and was never challenged, drawing off to win by six lengths in 1:16.84 for the six and one-half furlongs. The prohibitive favorite, trained by Mac Robertson, paid $2.10 across the board. Tez Virat was second and Sam Wayne finished third.

“I just steer him around there,” Bell said. “He does the work. That was easy.”

The fillies division of the $35,000 MTA Stallion Auction Stakes was won by Keewatin Ice, owned by Camelia Casby of Shakopee.

Jockey Juan Rivera tracked behind pacesetters Lady of the Castle and Somerset Swinger before swinging out wide around the turn and running off to win by eight lengths in a final time of 1:17.17.

The 3-year-old Minnesota-bred filly is trained by Bryan Porter. Somerset Swinger hung on for second and Lady of the Castle was third. Keewatin Ice paid $2.40 to win.
