Shakopee Man Gets Almost 12 Years for Weapons, Drugs, Counterfeit Money

A Shakopee man was sentenced to almost 12 years in prison after an October 2011 search of his hotel room by police yielded methamphetamine, marijuana, oxycodone, .22 caliber bullets, a .45 caliber pistol loaded with a hollow-point round and $8,000 in counterfeit currency.

On Feb. 15, James Howard Klein, 24, was sentenced to 140 months behind bars, the Shakopee Valley News reported.

The Shakopee Valley News has more on the case against Klein:

The case against Klein began outside the Walmart in Shakopee on Oct. 6, 2011 when a Shakopee police officer spoke with a man who stated that a female friend of his wanted help getting away from Klein, who allegedly had been assaulting her.

The Shakopee officer obtained the woman’s cell phone number, but when he called it he received no answer. Other officers checked Klein’s Shakopee residence and found nothing. Later that night, the Shakopee officer asked for help from the Prior Lake Police Department. A Prior Lake officer checked the Mystic Lake Casino Hotel registry and found Klein and the woman both registered at the hotel, according to the complaint.

At 10:35 p.m., the Shakopee officer, a Prior Lake officer and Mystic Lake security personnel went to Klein’s hotel room and knocked on the door. Officers reported that Klein refused to allow them into his hotel room and started a “pushing match.”

A total of 4.2 grams of methamphetamine and 248.6 grams of marijuana were located, according to the Scott County Attorney’s Office. A search of Klein’s vehicle in the Mystic Lake parking lot revealed $1,760 in counterfeit U.S. money, according to the complaint.
