Striking Cretex Union Members Share Their Stories
The strike started June 19 and has been tough, said one union member.
Cretex workers in Shakopee participated in a union rally Tuesday morning during a strike that has lasted since June 19.
The strike has been tough emotionally and financially, said Jerry Nytes. He has three years with the company.
"It feels bad," said Alex, who spoke on stage at the rally on Aug. 6.
The workers, who are represented by Laborers Local 563, say they are striking so they can continue to receive company contributions to their pensions.
Dan Parkin has over nine years with the company and expected to retire in two to three years.
His brother, Don Parkin, has already retired, but attended the rally to support the union members.
The brothers spoke about arriving to work at 3 a.m. to beat the heat. They said that they met company quotas and expectations.
Don Parkin said that the workers have worked hard for Cretex.
"A lot of guys here, we built this company," Don Parkin said.
Nytes said that he was mad: "Mad that we're not working and they won't come to us."
