Upcoming Sewer Work Could Result in Noise, Odd Smells

Crews contracted by the Metropolitan Council to repair a corroded sewer line off Highway 169 will begin work this month.

A sewer upgrade will soon begin in east Shakopee, bringing with is rude noises and strange smells, but minimal disruption to traffic.

In the next week or two, the Metropolitan Council (operator of the metro-area wastewater system) will start repair work on a segment of regional sanitary sewer pipe stretching through Shakopee, which has become corroded.

The repair work will affect a three-quarter-mile segment of the sewer near the quadrangular area of Eagle Creek Boulevard, Canterbury Road and Highway 169.

Residents will likely be affected by:

  • Contractor equipment parking.
  • Extended work hours, including 24-hour operations during portions of the project.
  • Lights, dust and resin smell from the curing of the new sewer.
  • The contractor will be diverting the wastewater past the repair areas, but hopes to keep sewer odors to a minimum.
  • Some noise from pumps, generators and other construction equipment.

The roads and landscape should be relatively unscathed by the process, however. The contractor, Michels Pipe Services, will be using trenchless technology to put new piping in place.
