(VIDEO) A Gym Just for Kids, Here in SLP

KidsFit is a new program at the Sabes JCC designed for youngsters to get exercise.

KidsFit at the is to exercise as cheese is to vegetables.

With it, kids are a bit more interested.

The new fitness club, which opened earlier this year, features kid-friendly exercise equipment designed to be fun. This includes things like the Treadwall, which combines rock climbing with a treadmill. There is also the Brain Bike, which allows kids to play computer games at eye-level while their feet pedal below.

All of the equipment makes exercising more of a game and less of a chore. And that's the point.

"It's all fun for them," said Derek Griffin, the KidsFit coordinator. "They don't even realize they're exercising. They're just running around having fun."

But that doesn't mean the club isn't serious about fitness. Griffin and other staffers on-hand are experienced personal trainers, and they focus on things such as cardio and core strength.

This makes KidsFit unique—Griffin said he thinks it's the only program of it's kind in the area.

"It's a blast, it's so much fun," he said.

KidsFit celebrated a grand opening on Thursday and is currently accepting kids ages 6-12 on an appointment basis. Children of Sabes fitness club members are free, while other kids can use the club for $10.

KidsFit is open Monday through Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The club is also open on weekends from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
