GALLERY: Rogers Runs Over St. Michael-Albertville

A look back, in photos, at Friday night's 35-21 loss to the Royals.

St. Michael-Albertville fell to 2-1 on the football season, falling to Rogers at home Friday night 35-21.

The Royals gained more than 250 yards on the ground, with No. 20 Jack Maguire, a senior, leading the way with 160 yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights were solid through the air, but made too many mistakes on both offense and defense to win, said coach Jared Essler.

"We talked about how, when you're playing a good team, that margin of error gets pretty thin. We made two big mistakes and they were able to take advantage. That, and we just have to find a way to stop the run," Essler said. "We have to find something."

The Knights trailed 21-7 with about 6 minutes left in the second quarter, but rallied for a 69-yard drive capped by a touchdown pass from Cole Krutzig to Michael Wiese.

After Rogers extended the lead to 28-14, the Knights answered again, again with a Krutzig to Wiese pass, this time on a four-play drive set up by the Knights defense, which forced a sack and fumble on the Royals' own 10-yard line.

But Rogers would put the game away with a methodical fourth quarter drive highlighted by McGuire, quarterback Matt Weber (who had a huge fourth down conversion) and No. 26 Kyle Wiliams, another senior. Rogers ran 11 plays, all on the ground, to ice the game with a touchdown to make it 35-21.

"It's tough, because we did some nice things on offense. Cole is really developing into a solid high school quarterback, and he and Mike have built something there. We'd usually get a second shot at these guys, but with us up in 5A now and them down in 4A, we won't see them in the playoffs this time around," Essler said.
