Here are the top three stories today in Jackson:
- Two individuals have been arrested by Jackson police in connection with the fatal shooting of Abdulhafeed Altareb, a father of five, at a Texaco gas station on Northside Drive. Curtarius Young, 20, has been charged with capital murder and aggravated assault, while 21-year-old Arshanti Marshall faces charges of hindering prosecution. Authorities currently suspect robbery as the main motive behind the incident. (WAPT Jackson)
- The 164th Mississippi State Fair is set to return to Jackson from Oct. 5-15. Held at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds, the event will include its beloved rides, concerts, and fair foods, along with new attractions to be announced closer to opening. Last year, the state fair brought over 500,000 attendees and an economic impact of almost $50 million. (Delta Democrat Times)
- The Jackson Public School District's Child Nutrition Department has announced the commencement of its Summer Food Service Program for 2023, running from Jun. 5 to Jul. 14. On weekdays, breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., followed by lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; meals are available at no charge to children aged 18 and under. Meals must be eaten on-site, with a full list of participating locations available at the link. (WJTV)

- This weekend's Cathead Jam music festival was a great success! Held in downtown Jackson, the event raised funds for students in underserved schools and communities. (WLBT)
- The City of Jackson is planning to open its pools for the 2023 season by Friday, Jun. 9. Pools were closed throughout the capital city in 2022. (WJTV)
- On Friday morning, two vacant homes on Hollywood Avenue caught fire. While information at the time of publication was limited, Jackson fire crews believe the blaze began in one house, then spread to the other. (WLBT)
