Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. On Wednesday, Jun. 14, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba announced that women who are pregnant and women with children under the age of five will receive free water filters. According to Lumumba, officials are still determining the best engineering solution to treat the city's water, therefore the water is still "several months away" from being completely safe. (Clarion Ledger)
  2. Jackson police are searching for the person who shot and killed 21-year-old Ayairia Anderson, who was eight-months pregnant. According to the investigation, early on Jun. 11 Anderson was shot while in her car on Industrial Park Drive near Interstate 220 after leaving the restaurant and club Soops. Anderson's aunt, Katina Eggleston, asks anyone with information to come forward and that the family will not stop looking for answers until they find the suspect. Eggleston said something needs to be done about guns and the senseless shooting of young people in Jackson and everywhere. (WAPT)
  3. American civil rights icon James Meredith is celebrating his 90th birthday with a 200-mile walk against crime across the state of Mississippi. Meredith had previously walked with other icons including Martin Luther King, Jr. The walk against crime is expected to conclude on Jun. 25, when Meredith reaches Jackson. (Simpson County MS)
