Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:
- The Jackson Police Department is investigating a homicide after a body was discovered at the scene of an apartment fire. Firefighters responded to a fire in an apartment unit on Wednesday morning around 6:30 a.m. at the Sunset Plaza Apartments. Deputy Police Chief Tyrone Buckley said the victim, who has been identified as 41-year-old Anthony Michael Wilson, "suffered from blunt trauma." Anyone with information is asked to call 601-960-1234 or 601-355-TIPS. (WAPT)
- A Jackson woman is speaking out after her ex-husband suffered a stroke and had to wait 90 minutes for an ambulance. Donna Echols found "Diamond Jim" Mabus unresponsive after returning home from an event. She called 911 several times while waiting for American Medical Response, the county's contracted ambulance provider. According to reporting in 2018, AMR is contractually required to meet 85 percent of emergency calls in Jackson and Clinton within eight minutes and calls within outlying areas of Hinds County within 18 minutes. - The Mississippi Museum of Art will be hosting a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, Jun. 17 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The free event will include vendors, food trucks, community art creation, a yoga session, and a panel discussion. For more information, click here. (MS Museum Art via Instagram)
