Here are the top three stories today in Jackson:
- After Friday's storms, two Hinds County supervisors are working with the City of Jackson and Entergy to help with recovery efforts. According to District 1 Supervisor Robert Graham, the north Jackson area suffered extensive damage and one person was injured after a tree fell through his home. One home was completely destroyed, 13 homes were extremely damaged, and 14 homes had minor damage. Hinds County Emergency Management Director Joey Perkins asked to declare a state of emergency, but Graham is unsure if conditions meet the FEMA threshold for federal aid. (WAPT Jackson)
- A flood warning has been issued for the Pearl River in Jackson beginning Jun. 23 until further notice. Click here for details. (Hinds County Emergency Management via Twitter)
- According to the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS), SNAP recipients who experienced a power outage for more than six hours due to recent storms can apply for replacement benefits. To apply, submit a replacement SNAP request form from the MDHS website and then submit the form to your local MDHS office by mail, email or upload to the MDHS website within ten days of the power outage date. - Bingo At Quisenberry Library, Clinton (5:00 PM)
- 2023 USA International Ballet Competition Performances: Round 3 Session 3 At Thalia Mara Hall (7:30 PM)
From my notebook:
- According to Entergy Mississippi president and CEO Haley Fisackerly, "the majority, if not all" Jackson Entergy customers' power should be restored by Wednesday night, Jun. 21. After Friday's storms, more than 11,000 Hinds County Entergy customers were still without power as of Tuesday afternoon, Jun. 2o. (WAPT Jackson)
- Jackson ranked 148th out of 149 nationally for the quality of its city services, according to a WalletHub report. The low ranking comes from service issues including the recent garbage contract. But, Jackson has the 13th-highest total budget per capita and its administrative capability is in the 45th percentile of major U.S. cities. (WJTV)
- Whether you are actively looking for a new home or not, it is always smart to stay up-to-date on the local real estate market and prices! Check out the latest homes for sale in the Jackson area, including a three-bedroom on Medallion Drive for $99,900. (Jackson Patch)
