Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. A sewer main break occurred along White Oak Creek in North Jackson due to erosion causing a portion of the creek's bank to collapse. The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality issued a warning advising people to avoid contact with the contaminated creek. Jackson city officials are working on temporary and long-term solutions to address the issue. (WIBT 3 News)
  2. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held public meetings in Jackson to discuss flood control options for the capital city. The controversial One Lake proposal, which aims to widen the Pearl River to reduce flooding, dominated the discussions. Supporters emphasized the economic opportunities it would bring, while opponents raised concerns about environmental impacts and questioned its effectiveness. The Corps will release a draft analysis in September and make a final decision in early 2024. (Mississippi Today)
  3. Three former Jackson Police Department officers, Kenya McCarty, Avery Willis, and James Land, have been indicted on homicide charges in the death of Keith Murriel, a Mississippi man who died in police custody. The officers face charges ranging from second-degree murder to manslaughter. The indictment brings some comfort to Murriel's family, who believe the officers should be held accountable for their actions, which were captured on body camera footage and showed the use of excessive force.
