Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:

  1. Shots were fired just after sundown at a carnival in nearby Pearl on Saturday, Jun. 24. Police said multiple fights had broken out during the event in the Outlets of Mississippi parking lot where shots were fired into the air. No one was injured in the incident, but the mayor said the carnival will be reducing its hours or canceled in light of the violence that took place. The police have not reported any arrests. (WAPT Jackson)
  2. Jacksonians 4 Jackson hopes to increase the number of voters in Jackson to incite change and demand a better city. The group had their first picnic in the park event where seven people signed up to vote. They consider this a great start as they believe every vote counts. The group encourages voters to research candidates and choose the one they believe is right for the city regardless of their party standing. Jacksonians 4 Jackson also hopes to increase the voter percentage from 2021's election, which only saw 17 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the city. (WLBT)
  3. The Mississippi Animal Rescue League (MARL) has been overcrowded with stray animals taken from animal control. An employee with MARL stated that they receive dozens of calls about stray animals in the neighborhoods but do not have the capacity to take any more. The Jackson animal control is understaffed and its facilities are unable to handle the number of animals on the streets in Jackson. The inability of proper animal control has led to increased incidents of attacks and repairs to fix the shelter are estimated at $500,000. (WJTV)
