Here are the top three stories in Jackson today:
- St. Dominic Hospital is closing its Behavioral Health Services, citing "financial challenges" as the reason for the closure. Sitaniel Wimbley, the executive director of NAMI Mississippi, said that this move could be a blow to people seeking mental health care. Wimbley explained that St. Dominic is one of two places in the city where people experiencing a mental health crisis are taken, and the hospital also provided care for people across the state. Wimbley is especially concerned about having fewer beds available in the city for people who need treatment and stabilization. (WLBT)
- Residents at the Village Apartments off Raymond Road are afraid for their safety after a recent shooting. One resident said that living at the apartment complex was like "living in a war zone." Residents say the most recent shooting occurred early Tuesday morning, and one resident described her fear as she checked on her children after hearing shots and finding their window had been hit by a bullet. Another resident, Cassandra Frost, said she has seen several people — including children — walking around the apartment complex with guns. (WAPT)
- An elderly woman sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a group of dogs in a Jackson neighborhood. The incident occurred on Clairmont Street, where residents say the dogs have been causing problems for years. Resident Nancy Singleton said there are about a half dozen aggressive pit bulls that chase people and vehicles in the area. She also said that neighbors have asked the dogs' owner to put them on a leash, but the owner has not done so. The Jackson Police Department confirmed that two dogs were involved in the attack, and they are both with animal control. (WLBT)
