A tornado touched down in Jackson on Wednesday afternoon, causing damage to structures at Jackson State.

JACKSON, MS — A tornado touched down in Jackson and caused damage to buildings at Jackson State, according to WJTV meteorologist Jacob Lanier.

The tornado touched down in the southwest Jackson area around 4:40 p.m. and moved in a northeast track, hitting Jackson State, according to the report.

Video from a Twitter user shows damage to a roof in the Jackson area, and tornado sirens can be heard in the background.

A tweet from the Mississippi Braves minor league baseball team's official account showed a funnel cloud visible from the Pearl area.

As of 5:49 p.m. Wednesday, over 54,000 customers were without power in Mississippi as storms battered the state, according to poweroutage.us.

A tornado warning had been issued in the Jackson area until 5:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning encompassed areas in central Rankin County and southeastern Hinds County.
